Matthew 14:22-33 — Jesus sends the disciples ahead by boat, then comes to them walking on the sea in the fourth watch of the night. Peter asks to come to him on the water, walks a few steps, then sees the wind and starts to sink. He cries out, "Lord, save me," and Jesus immediately reaches out and catches him, then asks, "Why did you doubt?" The chapter ends with the disciples worshiping him: "Truly you are the Son of God."

Genesis 37:1-4 — Joseph, the favored son, wears the coat that marks him as set apart. His brothers see the favoritism and "could not speak peacefully to him." Envy has already taken root before anything else happens.

Genesis 37:12-28 — The envy becomes action. The brothers plot to kill Joseph, then Reuben talks them into throwing him into a pit instead, then Judah proposes selling him to the Ishmaelites/Midianites for twenty pieces of silver. Joseph goes down into the pit, and down again into slavery in Egypt — with no rescue in sight.

Romans 10:5-15 — Paul contrasts a righteousness that tries to ascend ("who will ascend into heaven?") or descend ("who will descend into the abyss?") to secure salvation, with the righteousness of faith, which says the word is already near — "in your mouth and in your heart." No one has to climb up or go down to fetch it. Then Paul moves to "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved," and the famous line about beautiful feet bringing good news.
